conservative politics Liz Truss became Britain’s new prime minister on Tuesday, the third woman to hold the position, having accepted official order from Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral Castle, Scotland.
It is the first time the 96-year-old monarch, who faces ongoing mobility issues, has held this important audience at his Aberdeenshire retreat instead of Buckingham Palace.. Today is also the first time Her Royal Highness has been photographed since she was spotted arriving at the estate on July 21 for her summer vacation.
In protocol the act is called a “hand kiss”, although in practice it is a bow or a handshake. Buckingham Palace released an image taken of the king asking Truss to form a new government.
The event took place at noon (local time, 11:00 GMT), when the hitherto Foreign Minister arrived at Balmoral. The castle became a meeting place of this type for the first time during the reign of Elizabeth II.
The meeting consisted of formalities governed by British political tradition: the queen solicited candidates to form a new government, to which the designated person usually responds with a simple “yes.”
“The Queen received (…) Elizabeth Truss in audience and asked her to form a new Administration. Truss accepted Her Majesty’s offer and kissed the hand at the time of his appointment as Prime Minister,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
Shortly before that, the prime minister to this day, Boris Johnson, had tendered his resignation formally to the king, having announced his intention to step down on July 7.
Truss won in the primary elections held in August within the Conservative Party to elect its new leader, who automatically takes over the leadership of the Executive thanks to its parliamentary majority.
This photo released by Buckingham Palace shows a smiling monarch holding a staff while shaking hands with the monarch. Later, more pictures were released, in which she is seen alone amidst a large environment with symmetrical decorations.
The meeting took place in the green-carpeted Balmoral living room, which had a matching green sofa, a leaf-patterned cloth chair, a fireplace, and some old horse-themed paintings on the walls.
The Queen usually spends August and September at her Highland retreat, where he joins the rest of the family at various stages. Prince William and Kate and their children Prince George, nine, Princess Charlotte, seven, and Prince Louis, four, were among those who have gone to Balmoral this year.
It’s not yet known whether Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will visit him this week. Yesterday they attended the One Young World Summit in Manchester, and today they are in Germany for the pre-Invictus Games events in Düsseldorf. They will then return to England for the WellChild Awards in London on Thursday.
The Earl and Countess of Wessex and their children, Lady Louise and Viscount James, have visited the Queen, and Prince Charles is said to be visiting daily. Prince Andrew has also been to Balmoral.
The castle is the Queen’s private estate that Queen Victoria and Prince Albert made their home in Scotland in the early 1850s.
The act was held at the residence of the Royal House in Scotland due to mobility issues suffered by Elizabeth II, according to Buckingham Palace.
Following the meeting, Truss heads to London, where he will deliver his first speech as head of government at the gates of his residence at 10 Downing Street.
Furthermore, it is hoped that the composition of the Executive will be known, with the current Minister of Business, Kwasi Kwarteng, the big favorite to occupy the Economics portfolio and hence the unofficial “number two” title in the cabinet.
Truss becomes the country’s third prime minister, after fellow conservatives Margaret Thatcher (1979-1990) and Teresa May (2016-2019).
