Britain’s Conservative Party will hold its four-day party congress in Birmingham starting Sunday. The party is currently going down in opinion polls and has just got a new leader and prime minister, Liz Truss. He will close the congress with a speech on Wednesday. The first prominent speaker was Minister of Finance Kwasi Kwarteng, Monday afternoon.
The recent tax measures taken by the Central Quarter led to a sudden drop in the pound exchange rate from September 23 and widespread unrest throughout the country. This is a country where places are prepared for the winter for people who can no longer afford heating in their homes. The multitude of crises undermined confidence in the party which has appointed prime minister since 2010.

The main opposition Labor party had 54 percent of those surveyed behind it in a recent opinion poll, and the Conservatives fell to 21 percent. Labor hasn’t been this popular in the polls since the late 1990s.

Truss became the successor to Conservative leader Boris Johnson who was embattled two days before Queen Elizabeth’s death. He was the 15th Prime Minister to appoint Elizabeth, who died on September 8. In the UK, the political downfall of a Prime Minister, like Johnson’s, does not automatically mean new elections, but the ruling party can go ahead with another Prime Minister.
