The editor-in-chief of NOS Sport immediately resigned after years of inappropriate behavior in the editorial office

Yesterday, further details about this inappropriate behavior and workplace bullying emerged in an article in the Volkskrant. De Volkskrant spoke to 32 employees, former employees and other NOS Sport stakeholders. The article stated, among other things, that presenters Tom Egbers and Jack van Gelder exhibited transgressive and intimidating behavior.

Meanwhile, Tom Egbers hasn’t appeared on screen for a while. His wife Janke Dekker has also stepped down as chair of Mores, the center for reporting undesirable behavior in the Dutch cultural and creative sector.

It was announced on Thursday that the editor-in-chief of NOS Sport would step out “in due course” in response to reports of inappropriate behaviour. The resignations will be carried out in stages “to ensure the continuity of sports reporting”.

The decision received a lot of criticism. Including the professional association for confidential counselors who consider it a very bad signal for victims. After all the criticism, it has now been decided that the four-person editor-in-chief will leave “immediately”. This concerns editor-in-chief Maarten Nooter and his three deputies Pim Marks, Selma Schuurman and Ewoud van Winsen. An interim editor-in-chief will be appointed on a short-term basis, and will remain in office until a new editor-in-chief is recruited. A new editorial team will then be formed.
