The Dominican Republic and the United Kingdom sign a Memorandum of Understanding for infrastructure projects in the water, public health, transport, energy and security sectors

Santo Domingo. – The Governments of the Dominican Republic and the United Kingdom signed this Thursday a Memorandum of Understanding where the initial parameters for future cooperation between the two countries were set, incl creation of commercial relationships and facilitation of financial support.

Protocol signed byr The Minister of the Presidency, Joel Santos Echavarríaon behalf of the Dominican Government and by His Excellency’s Secretary of State, through the Export Credit Guarantee Department doing business as UK Export Finance (UKEF), Vomic Shah, with the presence of the British ambassador in the country, Mockbul Ali.

Leading the action in the Green Room of the State Palace, Minister Santos stated that the agreement was made possible thanks to it trust developed between the two countries and the economic power of Dominica.

“The economy grew 4.9% last year and 7.2% the previous year and maintained good stability as reflected in the main risk rating, which in the midst of this process has created a positive outlook for our economy,” fast.

Evaluating the improvement of credit lines by the UK Government

He stated that international cooperation and on this occasion the relationship with the UK is another example of how the Dominican Republic can be strategically strengthening infrastructure and strengthening social aspects which are the two main objectives of President Luis Abinader’s Government Plan.

In addition, the minister appreciated the credit enhancement by the UK Government after pointing out that it was due to the trust and bilateral relationship between the two countries which dates back to the 19th century and gets stronger every time.

“On behalf of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Luis Abinader, we express our deepest gratitude to the Government of the United Kingdom, for the trust they have placed in the Government of Dominica to finance building works that will benefit Dominicans.”said the minister.

Projects for water, public health, transportation, energy and security

The memorandum will cover projects to be implemented by agencies such as the Ministries of Defence, Agriculture, Public Health and Energy and Mines, as well as the National Institute of Water Supply and Sewerage (INAPA), Santo Domingo Aqueduct and Sewerage Corporation (CAASD), the National Resources Institute. National Hydraulic Power (INDRHI) and Metropolitan Bus Service Office (OMSA).

“Inapa will be in charge of the implementation of eight development projects, such as the Universal Sanitation of Tourism and Coastal Cities and the construction of the Eastern Region’s Double Water Canal”Santos pointed.

The same indicates that CAASD will conduct a Social Impact Assessment, Sanitation and Distribution of Residual Waters 92 canada around Greater Santo Domingosolid waste management proposal designs in affected communities, as well as wastewater designs from the Greater Santo Domingo gorge.

The Minister also stated that the agreement contains 15 development projects which is part of the agreement between the two countries, is scheduled to enter into force in 2024.

Minister Santos recalled that after a meeting on 6 June between President Luis Abinader and the British Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Mockbul Ali, they reported on extension of the credit limit to the state to 4,000 million pounds sterling by the British Government because of confidence in the Dominican economy.

“Today, 16 days later, we meet again to sign a Memorandum of Understanding that will provide the Dominican Republic with access to resources for the implementation of strategic infrastructure projects in the water, public health, transport, energy and security sectors,” show.

Growth of bilateral relations between the two countries

Vomic Shah thanked President Luis Abinader on behalf of UK Export Finance for the interest and trust placed by the Dominican Government in the UK.

The signing was attended by the Minister of Public Health, Daniel Rivera, and Deputy Minister for the Dominican Community Abroad, Carlos de la Mota, as well as officials and representatives of the British Embassy in the country.
