This would be the longest union action in the history of the National Health Service.
Workers from all walks of life continue to protest against the improvement of the UK’s workforce. In the last few hours, doctors announced they would return to protesting on British soil in a strike that promises to be historic, as it will last five days, making it the longest act of unity in the history of the National Health Service. The demonstrations will start on the 13th of next month and it is expected that the health system will completely collapse, with the cancellation of operations and massive shifts.
Since last year, Britain has been badly shaken by these demonstrations, each time hogging more and more workers, seeking better wages amid rising inflation rates. Returning to this infirmary embodiment, those with up to eight years of experience in hospital or three years in general practice will take part. It will thus be the fourth strike by doctors so far in 2023. The British Medical Association is demanding a “full restoration” of wages, which have fallen by 26%, according to their estimates. On the government side, the authorities are only offering a 5% increase.
“We declared the longest single strike in NHS history but this is not a record we want to set. Even now, the government could dissuade us if it sits down to negotiate with a credible pay recovery offer,” British Medical Association junior doctors’ committee deputy chairmen Robert Laurenson and Vivek Trivedi said in a statement. “With 7.4 million people on the waiting list for surgery and care, 8,500 vacant medical positions in the hospital, and doctors seduced by foreign governments offering adequate wages of £14 per hour, it is shameful that the government allowed the Department of National Health Service to deteriorate to the point of collapse,” they added. According to local media, many doctors have left the region for Australia, resulting in better income.
