Parliament will debate the business climate in the Netherlands on February 16. Minister of Economy and Climate Policy Micky Adriaansens will come to the DPR for this. You can follow the debate starting at 15.00 via live streaming and the Debate Direct application.
The Dutch business climate has received a lot of attention in politics and the media over several years, for example because Shell chose to move its headquarters to the UK in 2021. But also because of the nitrogen policy, which creates great uncertainty for many entrepreneurs and companies about the feasibility of future plans in Dutch.
Transition
In order for the economy to remain strong and flexible for the future, the cabinet believes that major changes must be made that also safeguard the business climate. In a letter to the House of Commons in April 2022, Minister Adriaansens wrote that major transitions must be made in the areas of sustainability, energy conservation and new forms of energy. The digital economy must also be further developed and the government wants to lead the way with new technologies. The last point will not only strengthen the Dutch economy, but will also create more jobs.
Challenge
At the end of 2022, Adriaansens acknowledged in a letter that the challenges were great, partly due to an increasing scarcity in the Netherlands: physical space for businesses and homes, good staff and talent for the future, and space for nature and the environment. The government’s plan to maintain a future-proof business climate amidst these challenges is discussed in this debate.
