Several sectors in England benefited from the death of Queen Elizabeth II. For example, flowers sold like hot cakes and hotels in London are almost fully booked, reports Bloomberg.

60 million wreaths

While many Britons mourn the passing of Queen Elizabeth, some sectors are experiencing a heyday. Ahead of the funeral, British florists hope to do good business. The sector has noticed that far more flowers are being sold than usual, the British Florists Association said. The peak of the sale is expected next Sunday, the day before the funeral. Florists hope that even the peak turnover at the time of Princess Diana’s death will be surpassed. When he died in 1997, no less than 60 million wreaths were left at the palace of the British royal family.

The hospitality sector in London also thinks it can turn a profit these days. For this weekend, hotel room prices were on average 30 percent higher than 2019, due to increased demand. A number of prestigious hotels are fully booked, Bloomberg reports. ‘We are seeing an occupancy rate of over 90 per cent’, says Hotelplanner CEO Tim Hentschel. ‘Usually about half way through 70 percent.’

Not everyone benefits

The fact that these sectors are now benefiting does not apply to the entire economy. The queen’s death would probably be a huge expense. Apart from the whole funeral, a number of important sectors had to spend because of the death. For example, the British central bank had to print new notes, which did not feature Elizabeth’s face, but that of King Charles III. The national postal company also had to produce new stamps with the face of a new king. The day of the funeral has also been declared a national holiday, as a result of which production in the country has stalled.
