“Almost disastrous,” election expert Professor John Curtice called the first local election results. Almost everywhere, the Conservatives lost council seats to both Labor and the Liberal Democrats.
Even Aldershot, home to British troops in southern England, was lost, showing that Labor was trusted in defense matters.
A bright spot for the Conservative Party was the retention of Harlow, a small town above London that Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer visited several times during the campaign.
Labour’s setback occurred in Oldham, where Labor lost its majority on the council. In the suburbs of Manchester, where the majority of the population is Muslim, the pro-Palestinian party led by George Galloway succeeded in looting the loot.
South of Blackpool, a famous coastal resort on the Irish Sea, Labor won a House of Commons seat from the Tories in a by-election. It was not the Labor candidate who won, but the Conservative Party who lost.
Many voters didn’t vote at all. This pattern was also seen in previous by-elections.
The results were announced on Saturday
The final results will only be known on Saturday, as will the results of the race for mayor of London. After counting one fifth of the votes, it can be concluded that there has been no recovery for the Conservative Party.
After fourteen years, voters seem to have grown tired of the Tories. Rising immigration, incompetent government, a weakening economy and internal strife are seen as causes of poor results. The hope is that Rwanda’s policy of deporting illegal immigrants will bring about a turnaround.
There have been calls within the party to replace Sunak with a more charismatic leader, including Penny Mordaunt. However, another leadership change, made shortly before the election, could undermine credibility.
Some members of the Conservative Party regretted Boris Johnson’s sacking two years ago. Former prime ministers are good at winning elections. When he cast his vote on Thursday, he was shown the door because he did not have an identity card with him. Showing identification at the polling station was introduced by himself.
