The Crimean Bridge, which connects the peninsula annexed by Russia to the Russian mainland, may be the target of a Ukrainian attack. Explosions were heard near Kerch, the town on the peninsula where the bridge started. on social media circulating image where a puff of smoke could be seen over the bridge.
What exactly happened is unclear at this point. Traffic on the bridge has now been stopped.
The Crimean Bridge is of great importance to Russia both strategically and symbolically. Despite the peninsula since the massive invasion of Ukraine for Russians also accessible by land, the bridge is still used to supply residents of Crimea, the Sevastopol naval base, and Russian troops in southern Ukraine. Moreover, the bridge symbolizes the ‘eternal bond’ between Russia and Crimea.
Over the past year, the bridge has been repeatedly attacked by Ukraine. In October last year, the bridge was heavily damaged after a huge explosion. A month ago, two explosions ripped through a lane of cars, buses and trucks. Part of the bridge is still passable.
