Former German tennis player Boris Becker has been released from a British prison, the government has confirmed. The 55-year-old Becker, who has been behind bars since earlier this year for bankruptcy fraud, is likely to be deported from the country in the near future.
Earlier this year, the 6-time Grand Slam winner was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison by a court in London for holding more than 2.5 million euros after he was declared bankrupt.
Creditors want 60 million
Becker has a loan of more than 3 million euros after the purchase of his estate in Mallorca. He will be in the red with his creditors for a total of around 60 million euros. He was previously convicted of tax evasion in 2002. For this he received a suspended prison sentence in his home country.
Short punishment
Becker only had to serve 8 months of his sentence in England. Becker was expected to spend half of his sentence in prison, but the German was soon released and set to be deported from the country. Becker was therefore leaving Great Britain after so many years. The German tennis great has lived in England since 2012.
Automatic ejection
The 55-year-old former tennis player is eligible for automatic deportation because he is a foreigner without a British passport and has been sentenced to more than 12 months in prison.
