British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has personally asked his ministers to draw up a plan for the UK’s rapprochement with the European Union after Brexit. It reports Bloomberg.

Rapprochement is sought on topics such as defence, migration and so-called economic statesmanship, which includes trade, energy and international standards.

Therefore, the British representative hopes to come up with a solution to the dispute between the EU and the UK regarding a post-Brexit trade agreement for Northern Ireland in the coming days. Sunak will be able to use the possible breakthrough on the issue as a platform to further improve relations with the EU.

Balance

But while Sunak wanted a rapprochement, he could expect fierce opposition within his own party. He must first find a balance between keeping the Brexiteers in his party and persuading Northern Ireland’s Democratic Union Party to lift the veto on the government devolved there.

The biggest challenge, however, came just after he had made it, when he had to sit down with European leaders who had been trying to do business in Britain for seven years.
