British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Egypt next week. Sunak had previously decided to skip the COP27 conference to focus on “urgent” domestic issues. After a storm of criticism, the prime minister has now decided to stay away.

The opposition and climate organizations reacted strongly to Sunak’s decision not to attend the summit in Egypt itself. It was later announced that the plan was being reconsidered. The prime minister announced via Twitter that he would attend COP27 as measures against climate change were needed and ‘there is no energy security without investing in sustainable energy sources’.

Sunak last week became the third British Prime Minister in a year. Her predecessor Liz Truss had to resign after weeks of criticism over her economic policies. One of the pressing domestic issues that Sunak now wants to focus on is drawing up a new economic plan with Treasury Secretary Jeremy Hunt. It should be served on November 17th.

Johnson to COP26

On Tuesday it was announced that former Prime Minister Boris Johnson would attend the climate summit. Under his leadership, the previous COP26 climate summit was held in Glasgow last year. “I was invited by the Egyptians,” he told Sky News. “I want to talk about how I see things and how we see things in England.” Johnson believes that countries should come up with more ambitious climate plans.
