Snow. You’ve probably seen it on the news, or during your winter sports vacation. This extraordinary weather phenomenon seems to be getting closer. Is there a chance that it will also snow in our country?
It seems that snow is no longer just happening in icy countries like Russia, Finland and Norway. Over the past weekend, even Great Britain was hit by snow. Due to heavy snowfall, London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports had to be closed Closed. According to some, it is unimaginable that it will also snow in the Netherlands.
“The possibility that it will happen, but fortunately the chance is very small,” said Thomas Indra of MeteoScience. “Snow requires very specific weather conditions. The temperature at altitude should be about 12 degrees below freezing. Next, there should be enough water droplets in the air, which should also form snow crystals. I don’t see that happening anytime soon in Holland.”
According to Indra, we should not confuse the climate in the Netherlands with that in Russia: “Rain or something like that, it can happen any time. But snow in Holland? No, that seems highly unlikely to me.”
