Arno Kamminga won a World Cup silver medal in the 100 meter breaststroke on Monday after an insane result. He had to share second place with two other swimmers, who tapped at the same time.
Kamminga, Italian Nicolò Martinenghi and American Nic Fink all clocked the exact same time: 58.72. This created a rarely seen situation where they all received silver at the medal ceremony.
The battle for gold is unequal. Qin Haiyang, who is also the highest in the series, scored 57.69. The 24-year-old Chinese racer was one second faster than his three pursuers.
Kamminga also finished second at the World Cup in Budapest last year and took silver at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. Still, the silver medal at the World Cup is a nice boost for the Dutchman. He was exhausted last year and took months not to swim.
A world title shot is an important test of 27-year-old Kamminga’s strength ahead of next year’s Olympics in Paris. With his medal in Japan, he had confirmation he was on his way back.
Little success for the Dutch after Kamminga
Aside from Kamminga’s silver medal, there wasn’t much for the Dutch team to celebrate in the evening session. Marrit Steenbergen finished seventh in the 200 meter medley final in 2:11.89.
Maaike de Waard and Kira Toussaint failed to qualify for the 100 meter backstroke final. De Waart scored a time of 59.84 seconds and finished eleventh. Toussaint was unsuccessful with a time of 59.89.
The Netherlands also had no success in the semifinals of the 100 meter breaststroke. Schouten’s Test ran a time of 1.06.53 and finished tenth, where it required a place in the top eight.
