Tienen is one of the poorer political monuments. Last Wednesday, honorary board member André Moreau passed away at the age of 88. André is not only very active politically. This is how he put his heart and soul into the De Heidebloem theater society.
André Moreau was born on January 1, 1935 in Overwinden near Landen. He then moved to Sugar Town, but after the death of his wife Leah, he moved again to relatives in Landen. In 2022 André was given a standing ovation there on New resident’s Day.
André committed in Tienen to PVV, then VLD and Open VLD. For this party he was elected to the city council in 1976 and in 1982 he went to the electorate on a separate list of VSD (Free Social Democrats), where he immediately became alderman. He later reconciled with the VLD and in June 1999 he became a Member of the Flemish Parliament, a mandate he held until 2004. From 2004 to 2006 he was still chairman of the OCMW in Tienen.
“André is no less than 36 years alderman and 18 years alderman,” said mayor Katrien Partyka (CD&V). “So you can definitely call it a political monument. Tienen’s political celebrity is leaving us very quickly these days. I will always remember André as a gentleman, always up for a chat. My sincere condolences to his family.” (Read more under the photo)
André is a very socially committed person. For example, he is chairman of the liberal mutuality with offices on Leuvensestraat and chairman of the royal theater society De Heidebloem. André also has a smooth ballpoint pen. He wrote many books, including on the history of the Jewish people and ‘his’ Overwinden. He is also the publisher of the magazine Democrats. He also has a great passion for KVK Tienen, which he first played for himself – then Racing Tienen – and later supported.
Jean Defau, a member of the city council of Vooruit, has only fond memories of André: “I came in 1988 and that’s how we ended up in the coalition of socialists, Volksunie and VSD. So he sat next to me at the table for years and we hit it off immediately. André is a very social, true and loyal person. I called her on January 1st, not only to wish her a happy new year, but mainly to wish her a happy birthday. That makes it good. Hearing the news of his departure, I was very surprised. His health had been deteriorating for a while, but it had picked up really fast all of a sudden.”
Rooms are sold out
“It is with great sadness that we learn of the death of André Moreau,” said Louis Degeest of the De Heidebloem theater association. “He is a figurehead and chairman of our association, which was founded in 1981. André has always been very proud and tells anyone who wants to hear that KK De Heidebloem only played two lines at the time, but went to two sold-out halls for years. years at the De Kruisboog cultural center. Everyone will miss him as an honest and fair person with whom you can always discuss problems. If possible, he has a solution for every problem. Everyone can go to him. We will never forget him. He was and remains a role model for all of us.”
