Peru and UK sign agreement to develop health project in the north of the country

“I thank the United Kingdom for its support and trust in our Government to carry out these projects in Trujillo and Piura, this alliance strengthens the bonds of cooperation and friendship and allows us to advance on the path towards a more just, equal and democratic development of Peru”, said President Dina Boluarte at the signing of the agreement, at the Government Palace in Lima.

He argued that cross-border projects, such as the one agreed with the UK, “represent a unique opportunity to improve health services for the benefit of citizens in those countries.”

In this regard, he added that the health of his compatriots “should not be put on hold any longer” and that his management was pushing for the construction of bigger and better hospital infrastructure in the country.

Under these two agreements, we will implement the new infrastructure of the Trujillo Regional Teaching Hospital, in La Libertad, and the High Complexity Hospital of the 26th District of Octubre in Piura (…) and the latter will also serve patients from Tumbes, Lambayeque and Cajamarca,” he said, referring to the northern regions that benefit from the country.

He detailed that more than 1,400 million soles (340 million euros or 373 million dollars) will be invested in infrastructure in Trujillo and will have 28,600 pieces of advanced medical equipment, as well as being a level III-1 hospital, which are centers that group hospitals and general care clinics with larger units that produce health services.

Meanwhile, the hospital in Piura will also be at level III-1, with an investment of 968 million soles and will have 600 beds and more than 7,000 pieces of medical equipment.

The technical committee tasked with directing the selection process for awarding the two projects chose the UK and a consortium of companies from that country.

Meanwhile, Health Minister César Vásquez said the agreement with the UK was “historic” for the health of citizens in the north of the country and celebrated the realization of a dream that had been going on for years in the regions of Piura and La Libertad.

And the British Ambassador to Peru, Gavin Cook, said the signing was a “milestone” in bilateral relations between the two countries and a new opportunity for collaboration in which his country would demonstrate “transparency of knowledge and share best practices in the field of health” to create quality infrastructure that can serve the Peruvian people.
