Volleyball player reaches Nations League quarter-finals despite losing
21:45: Dutch men’s volleyball could participate in the quarter-finals of the Nations League later this month. The Orange squad missed the chance to qualify under their own strength due to a 3-0 defeat against Italy on Sunday. Since Poland went on to win 3-1 against Slovenia, the Netherlands is still confident of a place among the best eight nations.
The quarter-finals are July 20 and 21 in Bologna. The Orange would then be number 8 against Italy, who finished first. This gave the Dutch an immediate chance for revenge. On Sunday the fixed position is 25-23 26-24 25-21. The Orange squad left four set points unused in the second set.
National coach Roberto Piazza starts against Italy with Wessel Keemink (playmaker), Nimir Abdelaziz (diagonal), Thijs ter Horst and Bennie Tuinstra (passer/runner), Luuc van der Ent and Twan Wiltenburg (center) and Robbert Andringa (libero). The Netherlands played well with the European champions, but made too many mistakes defensively. Italy was successful with the tactical ball. Alessandro Michieletto capitalized on set points for Italy in the first set.
Orange started to play better and victory in the second set was up for grabs. Playmaker Keemink gave all of his forwards a chance, but none managed to make a point of redemption. Italy took six points in a row and won the second set. In the third set, Piazza’s side were able to equalize to 12-11, after which Italy took a definite distance.
It is the first time since 2002 that a Dutch man has reached the final at the highest level, then the World League and now the League of Nations.
