In 2009, Jason Derulo made his Top 40 debut with Whatcha Say.

Joel Desrouleaux released the first single from his debut album Jason Derulo with the song. The song became a top 3 hit in the UK and even reached number 1 on the American charts. In the Dutch Top 40, it debuted at a more modest number 12.

The original song is from 2005. It is an acapella song by Imogen Heap that has a distorted voice in Hide And Seek. A fitting method and in keeping with the theme of the song: the loss of a loved one. The song gained extra attention at the end of the TV series The OC Derulo announced that, as a music lover, he had acquired Heap’s album. He showed the song to his producer and the rest is history.

Jason Derulo sings his version about flirting with a woman without a current relationship knowing anything about her. Derulo admits to his flirtation and also wants to make up for it. Sean Kingston is also involved as a writer for Derulo’s version. The Pretty Girl singer, among others, was originally going to record the song as well.
