Shortly before her death, Janis Joplin recorded Cry Baby.
The song was recently featured in a Christian Dior commercial where Natalie Portman showed off her playback skills on a Janis Joplin song. The song ended up posthumously on Pearl’s album in the 1970s. Even though the song was not originally Janis’s because it was recorded seven years earlier by Garnet Mimms & The Enchanters.
Mimms was previously a member of Deltones and Gainors along with Sam Bell. The two decided to move to New York where they formed Garnet Mimms And The Enchanters. Cry Baby’s first release was an instant hit and hit number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Dionne Warwick handled backing vocals on Cry Baby.
In 1964 Mimms opted to pursue a solo career, followed by modest success in 1966 with I’ll Take Good Care Of You. A year later he toured England with Jimi Hendrix. Then he turned his back on the music. At the end of zero, his gospel album will be released.
In 1971 Cry Baby can be found on Pearl, which was a posthumous album after the death of Janis Joplin in October 1970. The b-side is also not an unknown track as Mercedes Benz can be heard on it. If it did not make it past number 42 in the United States, it made it to number 19 in the Netherlands.
