New Ground, the UK’s first co-housing community specifically for older women

In England this project is known New Field for being the first proposal for coexistence open to elderly women born with a commitment to combating age discrimination. Under the non-paternalistic and non-infantilized outlook of this age group, where most of the social assistance services are located, they struggle to combat the limited opportunities they suffer at both the individual and social levels.

Edismo is the third cause of discrimination in the world, after racism and sexism. Discrimination has been shown to reduce quality of life, increase social isolation and loneliness in the elderly. The consequences of the prevalence of edismon can affect various areas of life, such as self-perception, educational opportunities, policies, institutional practices or health services. Become much more prominent among women, which causes a greater decline in their status compared to men.

The New Ground project is seen as a sign that big times have come for the elderly. As reported Guardian, this is a self-managed community for women aged between 58 and 94 who own 25 self-contained apartments, eight of which are socially rented, which they can buy or rent with the addition of a shared space for socializing. The homes overlook gardens of wildflowers and orchards, and have a communal meeting room used for dinner parties, movies, or “proper” yoga classes. They also have a guest room for visitors who may be staying. Faced with the typical question that everyone asks about whether men are allowed in, they replied: “We have brothers, parents, children, grandchildren, lovers and so on. The only thing that’s happened is they can’t stay here.” It also served as an alternative to expensive nursing homes and care institutions. Undoubtedly, this is a choice that expands the freedom of older women to decide how they want to live each moment of their lives.
