Musk: Only paid users can vote on Twitter’s policies

Musk made the announcement after a majority of users voted in a poll for his resignation as CEO. “Twitter will make those adjustments,” Musk responded to a proposal to allow only Twitter Blue subscribers to vote in polls from now on.

Last weekend, Musk said that Twitter would first present major policy decisions to users via opinion polls. He then conducted a poll asking if he should stay or leave as CEO of Twitter. “Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll,” Musk said.

A majority (58 percent) of the 18 million voters want Musk to step down. He did not comment on the poll results.

After Musk took over Twitter with a group of investors for $44 billion in late October, he himself became CEO, although he said it was “temporary”. He then fired about half of the employees.

Twitter subscription service Blue sees Musk as one way for the company to make more money and be less dependent on advertisers. Since Musk’s arrival, Twitter has lost a lot of advertisers. They were worried that the platform under Musk was too lax with moderation, so their ads were placed next to unwanted messages. According to the billionaire, Twitter is ‘hard to go bankrupt’.

Twitter Blue is an $8 per month subscription that adds a blue tick to a subscriber’s profile. Paying members also get access to new features, such as post-editing tweets. Currently, Twitter Blue is only available in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Link ban removed

Twitter is also holding a poll on Monday about whether to ban users from promoting other social media platforms. Last weekend, Twitter announced another ban on linking to competitor profiles such as Mastodon, Facebook, and Instagram. But a day later the policy seemed to disappear. Most (87 percent) choose against such a prohibition.
