An Egyptian lawmaker has been evicted from a room at the climate summit in Sharm el-Sheikh during a press conference by a British-Egyptian activist. Politician Amr Darwish was escorted by UN security for continuing to speak through activist Sanaa Seif. He came to the top to fight for his brother, famous blogger and human rights activist Alaa Abd el-Fattah. He is serving a five-year prison term for allegedly spreading disinformation.
Darwish teaches Seif in Arabic. He felt other countries did not decide on prison sentences imposed in Egypt. Since he continued to talk through the meeting after that, he had to leave the room. The conference center will be the UN area during the Summit.
Seif made an emotional plea for his brother, who was on hunger strike and said he no longer wanted to drink, “to be deported to his other homeland”, England. “This must and can be stopped,” he said. “Put him on the plane today.”
According to the Anglo-Egyptian, who had also been imprisoned and lived in London, it was vital for the Egyptian government that his brother not die “while the world watches”. He hopes the world will continue to watch after the summit. Human rights groups are committed to its cause. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and UN human rights chief Volker Türk have also called on Egypt to release the blogger.
