Michael van Gerwen has accumulated a lot of prize money in his life. But the Dutchman also has to give up a large part of his taxes due to the taxes he pays in the UK – and this amount is increasing due to Brexit. In conversation with SportsBoom Van Gerwen joked about the amount of money lost to the tax authorities.
“I pay a lot of taxes in England. I probably own half the country,” said the Dutchman, who did not want to give exact figures. Based on HLN about 20 percent goes to taxes. “Darts is huge here, so I live here too. I live in the Netherlands, but I also have a home address here. I’m here 50 percent of the time.”
Prize money
After the Premier League Darts, where Van Gerwen won the equivalent of 320,000 euros, he said: “I’ll give half of it to tax. My manager also wants his percentage, so that leaves only a small part (laughs). No, that’s how it is. That’s the second thing. I don’t care. It would be nice to have money and do good things with it, but… No.”

The Dutchman reached the fourth round of the Darts World Cup on Wednesday evening by beating compatriot Richard Veenstra. Van Gerwen thus earned £35,000. Therefore, part of the funds is lost to the tax authorities. The winner of the tournament will receive £500,000.
