The soon-to-launch Twitter Meta competitor Threads will not be available in the EU soon. This was written by the Irish newspaper Independent based on a statement from the Irish privacy regulator DPC.
According to a spokesperson for the DPC, wrote the Irish newspaper, it is not yet confirmed whether the Meta’s Threads service will also be available in the EU. Regulators indicated that they are not blocking the arrival of this service and the social media giant itself is still delaying its launch in the EU. Meta itself did not comment.
The service will be available this week in the United States and United Kingdom.
Data use may violate the GDPR
The new Threads service, which has to compete with the now highly volatile Twitter, is a spin-off from Instagram. Threads use, among other things, Instagram users’ health and location data, as well as search history and other sensitive information. This may conflict with GDPR regulations in force in the EU.
In the early stages, the DPC blocked the inclusion of advertisements on the WhatsApp Meta messaging service. The reason is, data from Facebook and Instagram will be mixed for this. In the US, which has less stringent privacy laws, it is permissible to combine (personal) data from two sources.
