Last night a great musician stood on the stage of the Lampegiet Theater. Most people will know him as a judge on the television program Maestro. None other than conductor, double bassist and more, Dominic Seldis, with his show “Favorites”.
English double bassist Dominic Seldis was born on June 22, 1971 in Bury St. He trained at several schools: Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Mozarteum in Salzburg.
While living in London in his early twenties, he began to develop his solo career. He worked with some of the UK’s major symphonies and chamber orchestras and contributed to film soundtracks such as Harry Potter and James Bond.
Some time later he moved to the west of England and played as a soloist with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (1998). This was also when he made his television debut and after several TV appearances he became a member of the jury of the English language programme ‘Maestro’ broadcast on the BBC in 2008.
In 2008 Dominic Seldis moved to the Netherlands and became the principal solo double bassist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Seldis has been a judge on the Dutch program ‘Maestro’ since 2012 and can also be seen on other programs on Dutch television. For example, he conducted ‘The Orchestra of the Netherlands’ and ‘The New Stradivarius’ and was considered “dragging” on the program ‘Make Up Your Mind’.
In addition to being a double bassist for the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, he is also known as a conductor and speaker. He also gives master classes around the world and occasionally gives guest lessons at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
It took a while for him to come out. But once outside he shook my hand, introduced himself and asked how I was doing. Dominic understood Dutch well, spoke less, but we understood each other and the photo was taken quickly. After the photo, he got in his car and went home like most visitors.
