In his permanent struggle to protect to the world’s premier Marine Protected Areas against big trawlers, Greenpeace installed a 200 kilometer long protective barrier in Southwest Depththe sea area located in the western channel zone and celtic sea190 kilometers from the Cornish coast, in great Britain.
According to a report from the non-governmental environmental organization, it consists of: 18 giant ammonites weighing between 500 and 1,400 kilograms each dumped to the seabed with the aim of protecting the European sea areas which, even though they say enjoys the title of Marine Protected Area (AMP) by the UK government, is the object of increased trawling that destroys the ecosystem of the area.
In this way, from the NGO they are trying to prevent the ship’s nets from dragging the seabed, destroying everything in their path, as they will be trapped in the boulders recently installed in the area which, due to 4,600 kilometers long where inhabit very important species such as harbor dolphinthat leatherback turtle and different coral species, are considered as one of the most exploited MPAs in all of the UK.
“In the last 18 months alone, industrial fishing boats have spent nearly 19,000 hours fishing in this area. our new a rock barrier will ensure that one of the most exploited parts of this Marine Protected Area is out of reach of bottom trawling”, they commented from Greenpeace, via a press release.
“We have installed these natural rock shields at the Dogger Bank Marine Protected Area (MPA) in 2020 and at the Brighton MPA offshore in 2021 to seal off some of these protected area zones for trawling”, they added.
According to what they denounced, this method of fishing, which is increasingly most practiced in the area mainly by Spanish fishing boats. destroying the seabed destroying habitats, change the big one blue carbon pool and dangerous the long-term health of populations of deep-sea fish, invertebrates and corals.
“It is also dangerous local fishing community, whose sustainable fishing methods cannot compete with such intensive extraction. Our natural granite mole blocks the bottom trawler, effectively protecting this area which is officially recognized as protected, but that exploited before our intervention”they concluded from Greenpeace.
