Lily Allen has apologized on behalf of the UK for the situation surrounding refugees seeking to cross into the UK.
The 31-year-old singer visited a refugee camp in Calais, France on Wednesday. From this location, refugees routinely try to cross the Strait. “It seems dehumanizing in all the articles I read. I hope everyone will be more helpful. “These people are far from what we know as love and comfort,” he said before his visit.
“I think as humans we have a responsibility to help people who are suffering. I apologize on behalf of my country for the situation you are experiencing. Sorry,” he told BBC cameras with tears in his eyes after what he saw in Calais. “There is no hope.”
Allen’s comments offended many Britons. The singer received a lot of criticism on Twitter. Allen responded to some of the comments: “I don’t need permission to apologize to a 13-year-old boy when it comes to the devastating impact our country has had on his life,” he wrote. “I do this out of compassion and decency. This is a free country. Whether you use your platform to spread hate, I use it to do the opposite.”
