King Charles III of Great Britain gave a moving message of loss and grief during his first Christmas speech since ascending to the throne, spoke of the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September.
“Christmas is a deeply moving time for all of us who have lost loved ones,” the 74-year-old monarch said in pre-recorded remarks at Windsor Castle, where his mother is buried.
“We feel their absence at every turn of the family season, and we remember them in every cherished tradition,” says Carlos.
“In the much loved Christmas carol, ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem,’ we sing of how, ‘In a dark street shines an everlasting light,’” said the king. “My mother’s belief in the power of light was an important part of her belief in God, but also her belief in humans, and I share that with all my heart.”
Charles went on to praise “health and social care professionals”, teachers and “everyone in public service”, he added.
“This is a time of great anxiety and distress, both for those around the world facing conflict, famine or natural disasters or for those at home looking for ways to pay the bills to keep their families fed and warm,” the king said.
“Whatever faith you may or may not have, in this life-giving light and with the true humility that exists in our service to others, I believe we can fight for the future.”
On Sunday, members of the royal family gather for the family’s traditional Christmas Day service at St. Mary’s Church. Mary Magdalene at Sandringham.
After 45 minutes of service, Charles and members of his family waved to the crowd outside the church., according to the BBC.
Queen Elizabeth was the longest reigning monarch of England at that time died on September 8 at 96 years old.
