Title:04 Oct 2022

Iran’s supreme leader has made his first public comments on the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who died after being detained by Iran’s so-called “moral police” for allegedly wearing her headscarf inappropriately. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei addresses military cadets at a graduation ceremony in Tehran on Monday; there he described the protests that broke out across the country after Amini’s death as “crimes of public order” and accused the United States and Israel of orchestrating them.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei: “I say clearly, the recent unrest and upheaval is a conspiracy engineered by the US and the usurper and fake Zionist regime. They had sat down to plan this protest. They had planned it. And those who worked for them, some traitorous Iranians living abroad, have helped them.”

US President Joe Biden said on Monday he was “deeply concerned” about the escalating crackdown on peaceful protesters, vowing to impose “additional costs” on Iran. On Monday, Canada announced new sanctions against top Iranian officials, while Germany and other European countries put forward more than a dozen proposals for new EU sanctions against Iran.
