The US provided more than 44 billion euros in military aid to Ukraine last year. This is by far the country with the largest number, according to the latest figures from the German Institute for Weltwirtschaft (IFW). On Monday, US President Joe Biden visited Kyiv and on Tuesday evening he gave a speech in Warsaw. Poland is an important link for Western arms supplies to Ukraine.
The Netherlands helped Ukraine with 860 million dollars in military aid, ranking it sixth. Apart from the US, only the UK, Poland, Germany and Canada give more than the Netherlands. In total, Ukraine received 62.2 billion in military aid.
The US provided more than 5.3 billion euros of support in the form of heavy weapons such as tanks, howitzers and MLRS systems. For EU countries, this amount is 4.3 billion euros. The Czech Republic supplies nearly a third of its heavy weapons stockpiles to Ukraine. The US supplies only a fraction of its own supply: 3 percent. These figures may now be higher, the IFW figures cover the period up to and including January 15th.
In addition to military support, countries also contribute large amounts of financial and humanitarian support to Ukraine. According to the IWF, European countries together contributed 27.3 billion euros to host Ukrainian refugees. This does not include protection costs in Moldova and Belarus, which are not included in the data. In absolute and relative terms, Poland spends the most on refugee shelter: 1.5 percent of GDP. The Netherlands spends 0.06 percent of its GDP on housing for Ukrainians.
