Hundreds of People Arrested at US Capitol During Jewish-Led Protest Against Gaza Attacks

TitleOctober 19, 2023

At the United States Capitol, police on Wednesday arrested at least 300 activists who staged a peaceful sit-in in the rotunda of the Cannon House building. Activists urged lawmakers to take steps to encourage a ceasefire in Gaza. The arrests came as thousands of people gathered on the National Mall to participate in demonstrations organized by the organizations IfNotNow and Jewish Voice for Peace. Organizers called it the largest protest staged by Jews in support of Palestine. One of the people addressing the audience was award-winning author Naomi Klein.

Naomi Klein: “Friends, these are the darkest days I have ever lived. The Israeli government, with the full support of all the Western powers in the world, announced its intention to commit genocide, using as its justification the fear that the Jewish people would suffer another genocide. And now you are in the process of facing that fear. We have to stop [ese proceso]. We’re here to stop it. That’s what we’re going to stop. “There are many more lives that need to be saved.”
