Images from the Amsterdam team on Instagram show how new signing Henderson enters the training pitch of the De Toekomst sports complex. After signing a 2.5 year contract with the Amsterdam team, Henderson had to wait until his work permit expired before being allowed to play and train, as England is no longer part of the European Union. Therefore, last Sunday’s home match against RKC Waalwijk came too early.
Ajax coach John van ‘t Schip will announce this weekend whether the former Liverpool man, who comes from Al-Ettifaq from Saudi Arabia, will play in the away game against Heracles Almelo next Saturday. The Amsterdam team’s next home game is against league leaders PSV on February 3.
Ávila may be out for a year
There is bad news about Gastón Ávila. The defender from Argentina suffered a serious knee injury during Ajax training. He will be out for approximately nine to 12 months, the club said. Ávila, who barely got any playing time from Van ‘t Schip, has already undergone surgery in Spain.
“Medical examination showed that the anterior cruciate ligament of my left knee was torn,” the left-footer said on the Ajax website. “I am in Spain now. I can be close to my family there and there are also specialist doctors there who can help me further in the rehabilitation process.”
Ávila arrived from champions Royal Antwerp FC last summer, but he couldn’t find his place in Amsterdam. He has only started four Premier League matches. His last appearance was at the end of last year in a dramatic cup tie with Hercules for Ajax. Amateur club Utrecht recorded a sensational 3-2 win.
