The German economy needs more migrant workers quickly to prevent staff shortages from causing economic damage. Rainer Dulger, president of the German employers’ organization BDA, said. According to him, the rules for attracting migrant workers should be relaxed immediately, otherwise a serious staff shortage could lead to a loss of wealth in Europe’s largest economy.

According to the BDA president, at least half a million new knowledge workers are needed every year to keep the German economy going. He said that now there are about 45 million people working in Germany, but in ten years there will be 5 million less when people retire. The gap must be filled with TKI, according to the employer foreman.

Eliminate waiting time

Dulger argues that Berlin should change its rules on migrant workers so that qualified employees from abroad can more easily find work in Germany. For example, long waiting times for work permits should be abolished. Dulger believes there should be a special agency to streamline the process.

But more work also needs to be done on domestic potential, Dulger said. This concerns, for example, more opportunities for people without education and more opportunities for work and personal life.
