French and British strike agreement to prevent boat people from crossing | Overseas

France and Britain struck a new agreement on Monday about containing the flow of refugees through the Channel. Among other things, these countries are focusing on control centers and more security staff.

The agreement stated, among other things, that France would receive 72.2 million euros from Britain this year and next. With this money, France wants to deploy more security service employees. They should be patrolling the north coast.

In addition, there will be a control center where the state will cooperate. France will take the lead in this regard. The United Kingdom will support the French reception and transfer center. The two countries have also invested in sniffer dogs, drones and helicopters, among others.

This year, more than 40,000 boat people have made the crossing from France to England. That’s a record number.

It is in Britain and France’s interests to solve “complex problems”, Britain’s Home Secretary Suella Braverman said Monday. He emphasized that there was no “quick fix”.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak promised to tackle the flow of people when he took office last month. According to the head of government, more deals could be made with France in the future. “This is not the end of our cooperation,” said Sunak on his way to the G20 summit in Indonesia.

Relations between France and England soured under Sunak’s predecessor. France and England then continued to point the finger at each other.
