When Brexit arrived in the UK, Rick came to the Netherlands, actually by chance, he said himself. “I went with my ex-girlfriend and I don’t have any plans to go to Holland yet. When my relationship broke down, I was already tied to the Netherlands and I wanted nothing more than to stay. Then I got a chance to start my own business and it has always been my dream. So is dr. Taste a good burger to increase.”

Be proud of others

Rick now has a new girlfriend and is even getting married next year. “I had a great time in Holland. Basically, the UK is very similar to the Dutch. But here I feel more freedom. Besides, I think it’s really cool that Dutch people are so proud of other people when they succeed at something. I’ve been through a lot of that since I started my company.”

Real win-win situation

Why did Rick set up his business in the kitchen of a cafe? Het Kleine Café’s kitchen is not used by the cafe owner. “I know the owner well and one day I told him I wanted to do something for myself, something similar to a pop-up. He was very enthusiastic about it and I was given all the freedom to do what I wanted.”

According to Rick, this is truly a win-win situation. “Besides takeaway, my burger is also served at the cafe. That way guests can sit comfortably and increase cafe turnover, because they don’t have to leave the house to eat. In addition, it also saves cafe owners a lot of money, because chefs are expensive these days. Especially with the many hours they spend each day.”

It’s on the menu

Menu Dr. Taste a good burger consists of six nationals and six different bite and that’s for a reason. “I like to focus on one thing. If you try to do too many things at once, it often doesn’t work. I always say it like this: ‘Do that one thing really well and you will succeed.’ I still think it’s really cool to see people like my burger. I also like to get creative with food, which is why I also have a burger special that changes regularly. That way I can try something new all the time.”

Secret recipe

The beef for the burger was made especially for Rick. “I used a special blend, which my butcher put together for me and was delicious. Most burgers also have specials signature sauce. What’s in it is of course a secret, but I would describe it as a jack of all trades. It tastes a little salty, sweet, spicy and sour at the same time. Therefore, it is not without reason that it often happens that I put a burger on the table in front of a guest and come back 20 seconds later and the burger is gone.”

The months ahead will be exciting for Rick. “We don’t know yet if there will be another lockdown.” But in this case, he already knew how to handle it. “Even though I have to hang a rope with a bucket from the window, because the kitchen is on the first floor, with residents in it. I just want to be able to continue to make citizens and make people happy.”
