“It’s time to say goodbye to football, and not just to yourself. There are too many emotions now, go to Milan and goodbye,” Ibrahimovic said into a microphone on the pitch at San Siro.
AC Milan announced on Saturday that Ibrahimovic will not renew his contract with the club. The striker returned to the Milan club in 2020 and played a part in winning the national title last season. He also became champion with the club in 2011.
“The first time I came here, you gave me happiness,” Ibrahimovic told the crowd. ‘The second time I came, you gave me love. You welcomed me with open arms. I will be a Milanista all my life. It’s time to say goodbye to football. Forza Milan and goodbye.’
Ibrahimovic has not played much this season, partly because he underwent knee surgery last year. He only played in four league games and scored one goal.
The 1.95 meter tall striker from Malmö played after Malmö FF, including for Ajax, Juventus, Inter, FC Barcelona and Manchester United, before finally ending up in Italy with AC Milan. He was also a regular for the Swedish team for over 20 years, where he played 122 international matches and scored 62 goals.
