The Falklands arthroplasty patient will be treated in England

Spire Healthcare has been selected by the Falkland Islands Government as the UK’s private provider of arthroplasty, (joint replacement for the knee and hip) services.

Islands Director of Health and Social Services Tom Bale told the Legislative Assembly Medical Services Commission that the Executive Council recently approved a document contracting and financing arthroplasty services for the benefit of those people, chronic patients, with hip and knee joint problems.

Bale added that final legal details were being worked out and polished and it was hoped that those hired by the outsourcing service in the UK (responsible for the entire imaging and X-ray process to ensure safe interventions), would start calling at a later time. in day, running year and so on. Bale said he would like to especially thank John Wallacott, Hospital Administrator, KEMH, who was a key support in leading and securing this arrangement.

He said there were currently no plans for such a surgical procedure at the Falklands until a recovery hospital with dedicated wards was completed, but it was still an aspiration for the following years.

He also emphasized that there will be groups of about five people who will travel at one time for arthroplasty treatment.

In a related report it was announced that this month the Falklands will receive visits from consultant urologist John Makunde and consultant psychiatrist Fraser Gibb.

Meanwhile, in September, Chilean pediatrician Rodrigo Duran of Punta Arenas will make his first visit since the end of the pandemic. It will remain on the Islands for two weeks and will also have a fully equipped clinic, as reported to the Health and Social Services Commission.
