Ch!pz was an integral part of the Top 40 for years, but now it’s been fifteen years since the group scored a number 1 hit. But Kim Kardashian and daughter North are also suddenly dancing. 1001 Arabian Nights. Why is the 2004 song suddenly becoming hype and does this also mean a comeback for the band?
“We were a little hysterical,” the members of Ch!pz told ANP when they saw Kim Kardashian do some dance steps to their song. “Having fun with my Northie,” the reality star wrote with a video of them performing the choreography for the song that originated on TikTok.
But how do we know Ch!pz? Cowboy Carnival and CH!PZ Black: they are the three biggest hits of 2000. The group was founded in 2003 through auditions and already consists of Rachel van den Hoogen, Kevin Hellenbrand, Cilla Niekoop and Peter Rost. Their first single immediately hit the mark. CH!PZ In Black (Who Would You Call) took second place in the Top 40 and first place in the Singles Top 100.
This was followed by four number 1 hits on both lists: Cowboy, 1001 Arabian Nights, One two three! and Carnival. Due to their huge success in the Netherlands, the team behind Ch!pz set their sights on international success and not without success. Cowboy also went first in Germany and even hit the charts in the musically competitive United Kingdom. Successful hits were also achieved in Austria, Switzerland and parts of Scandinavia.
As soon as Ch!pz appeared, they disappeared from the scene a few years later. Until 2007 it was followed by several top 10 hits in the Netherlands, a year later there was another television program, but after that it became quieter. In 2010, management decided that the group was no longer successful enough and so Ch!pz disbanded.

Revival Ch!pz
In 2018, Ch!pz announced a tentative comeback, initially as a joke. No new music yet, but shows are planned. They can be found at festivals and at Qmusic’s Foute Party.
The group is now suddenly in the spotlight again as a new dance is created on TikTok to the song 1001 Arabian Nights. Many people who grew up with Ch!pz still remember the choreography from the music video. But on TikTok it looks very different.
Ch!pz cleverly responded by shooting a video with influencer Thomas Brok. The group does the original choreography Brok the TikTok dance. This video has been viewed over sixteen million times at the time of writing. The number of Kardashian videos has reached 8.5 million. The song has been used by more than three million creations on the app.
With these high numbers on TikTok, you would expect significant growth on Spotify as well. Although the song’s popularity has increased somewhat, its counter still stalls at fifteen million plays. This may be because the artist and song title are not mentioned in most of the TikTok videos with the song Ch!pz.
Ch!pz members are excited about this new concern. According to them, a song from 2005 that manages to shake off all of this is something special, they told various media outlets. Booking requests are also coming again. Whether this will also lead to concerts and new music of their own, they dare not say for sure to ANP.
“People who know us from past and present meet us all the time saying: It’s great to have you back. We love your music, but come up with something new. Maybe we should sit down for that, because we hear it so much now.”
“Falls down a lot. General tv buff. Incurable zombie fan. Subtly charming problem solver. Amateur explorer.”
