This is the first time in the history of the UK charts that four Eurovision songs have entered the top 10. Until this week, the record was held by the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, when the festival was also held in the UK. That year, ABBA’s Waterloo was a number 1 hit. Numbers 2 and 3 that year, Gigliola Cinquetti’s Sí and Mouth & MacNeal’s I See A Star both reached number 8 in the UK charts. There were almost four Eurovision top 10 songs that year, but Olivia Newton-John’s Long Live Love, despite placing 4th in the Eurovision Song Contest, did not go beyond number 11 in the charts.

In 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1982, the Eurovision Song Contest produced two UK top 10 songs. 1982 was the last year a Eurovision song reached number 1. That honor then went to 17-year-old Nicole, who won the festival on German behalf with Ein Bißchen Frieden and scored a hit with the English version of A Little Love.

In our country, 1972, 1973 and 1976 produced the 10 most popular songs. In those years, three Eurovision Song Contest songs entered the top 5 of the Dutch Top 40.

This week we found another 8 Eurovision songs on the UK list (see overview above). So there are a total of 12 entries in the list. This equaled the record of 2014. That year also saw 12 Eurovision Song Contest songs enter the UK top 100. However, only one song entered the top 10. It’s Calm After The Storm by our very own Common Linnets. The song reached number 9.

A total of four Dutch Eurovision entries have been on the UK hit list. Apart from I See A Star and Calm After The Storm, the last two winners from the Netherlands are. Teach In’s Ding-A-Dong reached number 13 in 1975 and Duncan Laurence’s Arcade reached number 67 in 2019. But Arcade became a hit again in 2021 thanks to TikTok and thanks to this rematch, Arcade still reached number 29 .

Since the first British Eurovision hit in 1958, a total of 144 Eurovision songs have entered the top 100. Nearly half (62) were British participants. Of the remaining 82 participants, most were from Sweden. The country was good for 10 Eurovision hits between 1974 and 2023. Ireland (8 hits) and Norway (6 hits) also performed well in that regard. Ireland and Israel both performed 5 Eurovision hits, followed by Finland, France and the Netherlands with 4 hits.

This year the flag may be flown for the first time in Australia and Poland. Thanks to metal group Voyager and singer Blanka, their country’s Eurovision entry is now in the UK charts for the first time.
