British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the strike by ambulance workers in Britain was “terrifying” for patients who needed urgent care. The ambulance workers wanted to enforce higher wages and better working conditions by going on strike and only getting to the most urgent matters.

“It’s scary that people now don’t know if they are getting the care they need when they call an emergency number,” Sunak told parliament. Ambulance workers also went on strike in December. Around 10,000 employees in England and Wales participate. New promotions may follow later this month.

UK Health Secretary Steve Barclay earlier said the attack on the ambulance was “deplorable” and raised fears for patient safety, despite agreement on assistance in the most serious cases.

The ambulance workers’ strike was part of a wave of strikes that spread across Britain in protest at higher wages due to high inflation. There have also been actions in UK public transport, the postal service, border security and other sectors.
