Ron DeSantis still hasn’t officially announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election, but the Florida Congress has backed him: Lawmakers have signed into law that governors don’t have to resign while running for president of the United States.
This action creates an exception to state laws that establish the obligation of every officer to resign from office to run.
“It wasn’t meant for DeSantis”
According to the law approved this Friday in the Florida Congress, only officials running for president or vice president of the United States need not resign.
Republican lawmakers, who pushed for the bill, described it as a mere clarification and not aimed specifically at DeSantis. The vote in the DPR was 74 votes in favor and 34 votes against.
“This is not just for our governor, this is for anyone who is in politics,” said Rep. Republican Ralph Massullo during a House debate.
In addition, the law includes measures that change the state’s electoral landscape, such as approval of restrictions on ballot-by-mail and increased fines for third-party voter registration organizations.
The only thing missing is the governor’s signature for the law to go into effect.

Waiting for the official announcement
A week ago, information leaked that DeSantis would announce his candidacy in the presidential election in mid-May. However, Governor of Florida have stated that these dates were “not accurate” and no plans were being made for an announcement event.
The Republican said at a news conference on Thursday during a trip to Israel that he was “focused on the international trip” he is taking to Japan, South Korea, Israel and the UK.
“If there is an announcement, it will come at the right time. But if someone tells you they know this or that, that’s not accurate because no decision has been made yet,” he said.
