Britain’s Queen Elizabeth lights a beacon at Buckingham Palace on Thursday night. His platinum birthday was celebrated with the lighting of a beacon. The Queen pressed the big button, after which the main beacon with the Trees was lit.
The beacon is made up of a 21 meter tall tree comprising 350 smaller trees. After the Queen lights the flare, American singer Gregory Porter sings a song and the palace is in the spotlight with a light show.
Beacons have been lit all over the UK. It celebrates Elizabeth’s 70th birthday on the throne. Beacons aren’t just lit in their homeland: they’re happening on the Channel Islands, on the Isle of Man, and in the British Overseas Territory as well.
The goal is for the lighthouse to form a kind of chain, as is usually the case as a means of communication. Today, the beacon is a symbol of unity between cities, countries and continents.
In 1897, a beacon was lit to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. In 1977, 2002 and 2012, Elizabeth’s Silver, Gold and Diamond Jubilees were also celebrated with landmarks, such as Elizabeth’s 90th birthday in 2016.
