‘Brother Walker’ John dies | Top 40 News

John Walker, co-founder of the American pop group The Walker Brothers, died of cancer on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at the age of 67 in Los Angeles.

According to his spokesperson, Walker was diagnosed with liver cancer 6 months ago. Singer and guitarist Walker founded the band in 1964 with Scott Engel, who later called himself Scott Walker, John Maus, who had called himself Walker since he was a teenager, and drummer Al ‘Tiny’ Schneider. Later that year, Gary Leeds, then known as Gary Walker, replaced Schneider.

Their most famous songs are Make it easy on yourself and especially The sun won’t shine (anymore). The group was very popular in the UK, where their 3 albums Take It Easy with The Walker Brothers (1965), Portrait (1966) and Picture (1967) reached the top of the charts.

In 1967 this group was disbanded. Internal tensions, ‘artistic differences’ and the pressure their popularity had on the group members had become too much for Scott Walker in particular. The group members chose to pursue solo careers, but decided to perform together again in 1974. However, their recordings did not achieve success in the 1960s and in 1978 The Walker Brothers finally disbanded.

Walker became a luthier and set up his own recording studio in California. He began performing again in 2004.
