British Prime Minister Truss resigns, more than six weeks after taking office

Truss had submitted his resignation to King Charles. He will remain Prime Minister of the UK until a successor is chosen.

Truss said in his speech that he had agreed with Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 Committee, that elections for a new leadership within the party would follow within a week. The country could have a new prime minister this month. After the resignation of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, it took about two months for Truss to be elected by party members.

‘Not arrested’

The resignation is still a shock, said correspondent Anne Saenen. “We know Liz Truss’s position hung by a thread last week. Her authority is low. She recently reversed her economic plans. That, along with the hiring of a new finance minister, should give her some breathing room.” .”

That clearly didn’t happen. After a vote in parliament on shale gas drilling last night, the situation became untenable. “And today everything is gaining momentum again,” said Sanen. “More and more MPs are speaking openly against Truss’ premiership. Nothing can stop him.”

Prime Minister Mark Rutte found it ‘certainly very upsetting’ for Truss that he had announced his departure. Two weeks ago he praised her lavishly. “We agreed on a lot of things,” Rutte said of Truss. “We talked longer” at a summit in Prague in early October and “I thought it was a very good conversation.”

Rutte is ‘looking forward to working with who will now be my partner again’ in the UK. “It will be the fifth I believe.”

Truss took office as Prime Minister of the UK just a month and a half ago:

Truss made the decision to resign after a meeting at his official residence with key figures in the Conservative Party. He must have spoken about the increasing pressure within his own party with Brady, party leader Jake Berry and Deputy Prime Minister Thérèse Coffey. The popularity of Truss and his party has plummeted in his short time as Prime Minister, largely due to his faltering economic policies. Seventeen party members publicly said this week that Truss should resign.

new election

Opposition leader Keir Starmer finds it unacceptable that the Conservative Party can now once again elect a new leader and demand new elections soon. His Labor Party is far ahead in the polls. If it were up to the Conservatives, that election wouldn’t come until 2024.
