British parliamentary researcher arrested for spying on China | Overseas

A British parliamentary researcher has been arrested in the UK on suspicion of spying for China. It concerns a man in his twenties. He was arrested along with a second person under the Official Secrets Act. British newspapers reported this Sunday Time and confirmed by the police.

Parliamentary investigators are said to have been in contact with several Conservative MPs, including current Secretary of State for Security Tom Tugendhat and the chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Alicia Kearns. Contact with Tugendhat is said to have occurred before his appointment as Secretary of State.

The arrest occurred on March 13, but has now been announced to the public Sunday Time. A man in his twenties was arrested in Edinburgh, a man in his thirties was arrested in the Oxford area. The younger of the two had lived in China for some time, the newspaper said.

Searches were carried out at the man’s home and at a third address in London. Both are currently free on bail.

Last year, British intelligence warned that a Chinese agent – Christine Ching Kui Lee – had infiltrated the British Parliament to interfere in British politics for the Chinese Communist Party.
