Marit Bouwmeester failed to win a medal at the World Sailing Championships in Scheveningen on Sunday. The double Olympic medalist finished fourth in the ILCA6 class.
The 35-year-old Bouwmeester was already in fourth place before the final medal race. Frisian did not manage to move up the rankings. The world title went to Maria Erdi of Hungary, who beat Maud Jayet of Switzerland and Anne-Marie Rindom of Denmark.
The loss of the podium means it is not certain that Bouwmeester will be able to appear at next year’s Olympics. He already had half a nomination after his win at the Olympic trials event in Marseille, but should have won a medal for qualifying. Now Bouwmeester must appear at the World Cup in Argentina next January to secure an Olympic ticket.
Duko Bos finished seventh in the Ilca 7 class. The 28-year-old Dutch racer was no longer able to see the podium in the final medal race. Matt Wearn of Australia wins the world title. He was ahead of England’s Micky Beckett and New Zealand’s George Gautrey.
With his ranking for the Netherlands, Bos has already secured a ticket to next year’s Olympics. The Netherlands may send one sailor per class.
