Morocco has been named the best football team in Africa for 2023 by the Union of African Sports Confederations (UCSA).
The Atlas Lions received the prize Saturday night in Cairo, during UCSA’s annual gala.
Morocco’s Ambassador to Egypt, Abdelkader El Hajoui, received the award. He said Morocco deserved recognition for representing Africa with dignity at the World Cup in Qatar. He also praised the leadership of King Mohammed VI who upholds sports. Morocco plays an important role in Africa, according to El Hajoui.
Other sporting awards were also presented at the gala event. Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports received an award for his outstanding service to African sports. Liberia’s George Weah was voted Africa’s top football star. Senegal’s Fatma Diouf Samoura, former secretary general of FIFA, became Africa’s greatest female sports figure. South Africa’s Sam Ram Sami, president of the African Swimming Confederation, became the sport’s top administrator.
The best African club is Al-Ahly from Egypt, the best African confederation is CAF, the best African sportsman is Sadio Mane from Senegal and the best African sportsman is Ons Jaber from Tunisia.
UCSA also held a conference on combating corruption in sport in Africa. Various themes were discussed, such as the role of the media, preventing corruption, the application of artificial intelligence, and the governance of sports bodies. Successful experiences were also shared and a new board of directors was elected.
