The Bingham Cup is a biennial global rugby tournament, primarily for gay rugby clubs. During the official announcement on Casa400 on Saturday night, gay rugby club Amsterdam Lowlanders was informed that they would host the tournament in 2018.
“To qualify, we have comprehensive proposal must bow,” said club spokesman Erik Schoonhoven. “We competed against London, Edinburgh and Toronto. This is an internal election, each club that is a member of International Gay Rugby can vote for their favorite proposal.”
Schoonhoven continued: “What we emphasize is that there is still a lot to achieve in the field of rugby in the Netherlands. Rugby is already a very popular sport in the UK. With the Bingham Cup we hope to further boost rugby in the Netherlands and the acceptance of gays for giving.
Increasingly popular
With success: The Lowlanders got the most votes, so the tournament was held in Amsterdam. And it’s not just the tournament: “There are already eighty gay rugby clubs around the world, but the numbers are growing so fast that I think there will be around a hundred clubs by 2018. We estimate there will be almost two thousand.”
The match will take place at Amstelveense Rugby Club (ARC) at Sportpark West in Amstelveen, where there is even a pink changing room for the men.
According to Schoonhoven, this tournament is very important. “It’s a prestigious tournament; one of the biggest rugby tournaments in the world. But most importantly, it’s a great international brotherhood, a family affair. The atmosphere is great, I’m really looking forward to it.”
