Which city wins against Amsterdam
Amsterdam residents who left the city mostly moved to nearby cities, such as Amstelveen, Almere and Zaanstad. Sun 19 thousand people moved further afield, for example to Utrecht, The Hague and Rotterdam. Most of Amsterdam’s new residents come from Utrecht and Amstelveen (respectively 11 thousand, period 2012–2016). If the balance of settlements and departures is checked, the city government of Utrecht (3.9 thousand) and the municipality of Groningen (3.1 thousand) on balance, most people go to Amsterdam.
The picture of the movement of people aged 27 to 40 is slightly different. On balance, Amsterdam attracts this age group from more distant cities such as Utrecht, Groningen, Rotterdam and Noordoostpolder. The city is losing residents aged 27 to 40 to neighboring cities such as Amstelveen, Haarlem, Zaanstad, Gooise Meren and Almere.
