Amazon Web Services (AWS) said on Wednesday that it will launch a sovereign cloud in Europe for governments and customers in highly regulated industries.
The sovereign cloud will store data on servers located in the European Union, and only AWS employees based in the EU will have control over operations and provide support, Amazon’s cloud computing division said in a statement.
The European Union has been at the forefront of privacy and security legislation and its privacy watchdog last year launched an investigation into the public sector’s use of cloud-based services to check whether they meet its privacy protections.
Both business and government customers are increasingly using large technology companies’ data centers in the form of public clouds rather than building their own infrastructure. Microsoft and Oracle have also launched their cloud versions for European government customers.
AWS will launch first in Germany and make its services available to all European customers. (Reporting by Supantha Mukherjee in Stockholm; Editing by Christopher Cushing)
